WASHINGTON — Washington's expansion Arena Football League franchise will be called the Valor.
Owner Ted Leonsis and Monumental Sports & Entertainment officials unveiled the team name Thursday morning. The Washington Valor begin play in the spring of 2017.
The Valor will become the AFL's ninth team and will play their home games at Verizon Center, which also houses the NBA's Wizards, NHL's Capitals and WNBA's Mystics. All four teams are owned by Monumental.
Predictably, red, white and blue are among the team's colors along with graphite, all of which managing partner Roger Mody said had significance.
Commissioner Scott Butera said the ownership group was responsible for choosing the name, adding that the league approved it.
