Despite guarantees that the Utah Jazz would lose in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals with the Seattle SuperSonics, Jeff Hornacek scored 27 points and the Jazz prevailed 98-95 in overtime.
In Game 6, the Jazz won by 35 points, 118-83, after losing a game earlier in the series by 30 points. Karl Malone matched his number with 32 points as he dedicated the victory to 13-year-old Danny Ewing, who was in the terminal stages of leukemia.
In the end, all Malone could say was if people think were too old, shame on them, well be back after losing 90-86 in Game 7, just missing a shot at the NBA Finals. John Stockton would turn 35 the next season and Malone was about to turn 33.
