TEMPE, Ariz. — Tempe police say a man was shot by an officer after he threatened the officer with a knife.

Lt. Mike Pooley says two officers confronted the man Sunday night shortly after the man's girlfriend called police asking for help in getting the man off her property in the 1000 block of West Fremont Street.

Pooley says that after one of the officers found the man in the house's garage, the man started walking toward the officer with a knife.

Pooley says the officer told the man several times to drop the knife, but he ignored the commands. The officer then shot the man.

Pooley says the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. His name was not released.
