PORTLAND, Maine — The executive who led L.L. Bean into the modern era, the co-founder of Burt's Bees and the actor who played the villain in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" are among notable Maine residents who died in 2015.
Leon Gorman, a grandson of L.L. Bean, transformed the catalog company with a single retail store and 100 employees into a multichannel retailer with more than 5,000 workers. He died on Sept. 3.
Burt Shavitz, who co-founded Burt's Bees with Roxanne Quimby, was the reclusive beekeeper whose face appeared on labels of the natural cosmetics. He died on July 5.
Gunnar Hansen played Leatherface in the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre." He died on Nov. 7.
None were native Mainers. Gorman was born in New Hampshire, Shavitz in New York and Hansen in Iceland.
