In the lead-up to awards season, the holidays can sometimes get overcrowded with grim, R-rated, Oscar-bait kinds of movies.

This Christmas Day alone, for instance, will see new releases from auteur directors such as David O. Russell, Quentin Tarantino and Alejandro Gonzalez Irritu, all jostling for a piece of the box-office pie.

Luckily, though, this years holiday movie season also has a lot to offer broader audiences, including stuff like the Hunger Games finale, another new Pixar release and a throwback "Gremlins"-style horror comedy.

Oh yeah, and a little something called "Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens."

Heres a list of the holiday movie releases families and other content-conscious viewers may want to take a look at. Because not all are appropriate for the entire family, we've included rating information.
