The BYU Cougars had plenty of reasons to beat Hawaii, including the chance to remain alone atop the WAC, but a special incentive came when BYU president Rex E. Lee, who was released from the hospital after a bout with pneumonia, talked to the troops.

"You could say we won one for the Rexer," quarterback Steve Sarkisian said.

The Cougars appeared headed to a 45-0 win when Hawaii's Johnny Macon hit Brendyn Agbayani for a 52-yard score with two seconds remaining to make the score 45-7.
