Stocks closed lower Thursday on mounting evidence that global growth is slowing. Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar fell sharply after lowering its revenue forecast and announcing that it plans to cut jobs.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 78.57 points, or 0.5 percent, to 16,201.32.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.52 points, or 0.3 percent, to finish at 1,932.24.

The Nasdaq composite fell 18.27 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,734.48.

For the week:

The Dow is down 183.26 points, or 1.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 25.79 points, or 1.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 92.75 points, or 1.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 1,621.75 points, or 9.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 126.66 points, or 6.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 1.58 points, or less than 0.1 percent.
