NEW YORK — The U.S. women's soccer team is getting a hero's welcome at City Hall in New York City following a parade along the Canyon of Heroes.

The World Cup champs were honored on Friday afternoon in front of a crowd of 3,500 people at City Hall Plaza.

The ceremony followed a parade in lower Manhattan that drew throngs of young girls and other flag-waving fans. It was the first-ever ticker-tape parade in New York for a women's sports team.

The U.S. beat Japan 5-2 in Sunday's final in Vancouver to collect the top prize in women's soccer for the first time in 16 years.
