WASHINGTON — Barry Manilow has put the nation's capital in a patriotic mood, opening the Independence Day concert on the National Mall.
Manilow sang a medley of "America the Beautiful" and "One Voice" with the National Symphony Orchestra. Nicole Scherzinger sang the national anthem, country singer Hunter Hayes sang his new hit single "21" and KC and the Sunshine Band got the crowd on their feet.
Security was tight with officers checking all bags. Visitors had to pass through metal detectors near the Capitol.
Bradley Whitford, famous for his role on "The West Wing," played host to the live concert from the U.S. Capitol lawn.
The concert was being broadcast on PBS and NPR stations Saturday until 9:30 p.m. It concludes with a massive fireworks display over the National Mall.
