Residents are evacuated from an apartment building where a man is believed to be holed up in his apartment with two children and a woman after a shooting outside the housing complex, Thursday, May 28, 2015, in Chula Vista, Calif.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Police say a man was shot and killed by a neighbor who holed up in his apartment with a woman and two children in suburban San Diego.

Chula Vista Capt. Lon Turner says police are negotiating with the suspect after the Thursday morning shooting they call a dispute among neighbors. Authorities earlier had seen a victim down in a parking area and have since been able to confirm the death.

Police began evacuating the 39-unit complex about four hours after the shooting. About 20 people have been evacuated.

Witnesses initially reported seeing a man with an AK-47 retreat into the apartment, but Turner says evidence recovered at the scene indicates another type of gun.
