BUJUMBURA, Burundi — The office of Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza says the leader is back in the central African nation despite unrest in the capital over an attempted military coup.
Gunfire and explosions rang out Thursday in the streets of Bujumbura, the capital, as military forces backing the attempted coup battled troops loyal to Nkurunziza for control of strategic sites in the city.
The presidency said on Twitter late Thursday that Nkurunziza salutes the patriotism of the police as well as the patience of the Burundian people.
It was not possible to independently verify Nkurunziza's presence in Burundi.
The unrest came after the ruling party nominated him for a controversial third term.
