RAUL SANCHEZ, West, boys soccer: This senior forward is coming off a big week for the Panthers. After scoring a goal in a loss to Granger on Friday, Sanchez had a huge bounce-back game on Saturday scoring four goals in a 5-0 shutout victory over Hillcrest.
Sanchez is now tied with Grangers Uriel Heredia for 5As leading scorer with 13 goals.
“Raul has been an important part of our program for the past three years, but this year he has really excelled as a leader on and off the field,” said West coach Kris Hamlet, whose team is 6-3-0 this season and tied for third in Region 2 with a 2-2 record.
Sanchez has scored a goal in every game but one this season for West, including a goal against East, Brighton and Copper Hills in nonregion games.
Sanchez was a Deseret News 5A first team midfielder last season.
KYLIE JONES, Copper Hills, softball: The last year has been one of turmoil and uncertainty for Kylie Jones.
The junior outfield and pitcher transferred from Bingham and then underwent knee surgery (ACL repair).
“Shes worked really, really hard for six months so shed be cleared by the doctors to play,” said Copper Hills head coach Jentry Johnson. “Shes just come in made such an impact, almost from her first game.”
Jones hits in the third spot and has two home runs this season. Recently she began helping with pitching duties.
“She started her first game and we run-ruled Salem Hills,” Johnson said. “The next week, we run-ruled Murray on the back of Kylie. Shes just been very consistent in a couple of big roles for us.”
Jones didnt have any trouble adjusting to a new school as many of the girls she grew up playing softball with attend Copper Hills.
“Shes almost a ring-leader,” Johnson said. “Shes the funny jokester, very loud and very positive; shes our cheer starter. She makes up funky cheers and everybody just jumps in.”
