In a video, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seeks to take some of the mystery out of temple garments — what some people refer to as Mormon underwear — and temple robes, explaining the clothing's role as sacred religious vestments similar to a nun's habit, the Jewish prayer shawl, the Muslim's skullcap, and the saffron robes of the Buddhist monk.

"To Church members, the modest temple garment, worn under normal clothing, along with the symbolic vestments worn during temple worship, represent the sacred and personal aspect of their relationship with God and their commitment to live good, honorable lives," the article on mormonnewsroom.org stated.
