GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Westminster College men's lacrosse team remained perfect in first round games at the MCLA National Championships with a 16-4 win over 15th-seeded Briarcliffe (N.Y.) on Monday morning at the Wenwood Soccer Complex.

The second-seeded Griffins are now 15-5 on the season and they advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they will face the No. 10 seed Indiana Tech on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. MT. Westminster has now won four straight games and they are 7-0 all-time in the team's first game at the MCLA tournament.

"We just showed up and went to work today," head coach Mason Goodhand said. "We got in late last night and had an early faceoff, but the guys didn't let it affect them and they came out and played hard."

After leading 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, Westminster dominated the final three periods. The Griffins used a 5-1 second quarter and a 4-0 third quarter to take control of the game. They finished with a 44-24 edge in shots over Briarcliffe (8-5), while also posting a 30-25 edge in ground balls.

Brian Tyrrell scored four goals to lead the Griffins with Elias Fairman adding three goals. Collin Madsen had two goals and two assists while Cole Christensen had three goals and one assist. Kyle Postler and Andy Butterfield tallied one goal and one assist apiece.

Chris Burckle took the win in cage for the Griffins behind 11 saves. Erik Gronseth had a perfect third quarter and Ben Tourek allowed one goal during the fourth quarter.

"Burckle was solid in cage for us today," Goodhand commented.

Four different players scored for Briarcliffe while Matthew Gierl made nine saves in goal.

Tuesday's game versus Indiana Tech will be streamed live with the link for the broadcast available at It will mark the first-ever meeting between the Griffins and Warriors. Indiana Tech reached the quarterfinals with a 20-10 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Monday.
