SALT LAKE CITY — The Bonneville Lakers stymied the Olympus Titans' offense and converted several fast-break opportunities in advancing to the second round of the 4A girls state basketball tournament with a lopsided 49-27 victory.
The win mirrored Bonneville's preseason victory over the Titans, as Olympus struggled to get things going offensively and Bonneville utilized its height, speed and all-around athleticism to advance.
Kayla Eilertson hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game, and teammate Emilie Volk sank her own from beyond the arc on the very next trip up the court. On the Lakers' next possession Cortney Porter converted and added a free throw to complete the 9-0 Laker run.
Olympus suffered a sluggish start and failed to find its offensive spark through much of the first half. Bonneville quickly learned, however, to keep Rachel VanderToolen away from the free-throw line. VanderToolen presented hope for the Titans by sinking 11 of 11 first-half free throws.
The Lakers held Olympus to just one field goal in the first half, as 13 of the Titans' 15 points came from the line. Bonneville led 28-15 at the break.
The second half resembled the first as Bonneville continued to build its lead.
Unselfish play gave the Lakers the advantage, according to head coach Mike Russell. "No one cares who scores as long as we score," he said.
With some of the most talented players in the state, Bonneville has every reason to be confident, but Russell attributes his team's success to "zero ego."
The Lakers continued to work toward victory but the Titans staged a slight fourth-quarter surge. Olympus worked the ball around and displayed more energy on the offensive end of the court. The Titans created several more scoring opportunities and forced Bonneville to work harder on defense. The Lakers suffered a small scoring drought in the fourth, getting just two field goals and four points from the line. Still, it was too little, too late for the Titans.
Bonneville advances to the second round and will play Timpanogos on Wednesday.
