Ila Rose Fife1938 ~ 2012Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Ila Rose (Martin) Fife, 73, passed away peacefully on Feb 15, 2012 at her home in Salt Lake City after a special, love-filled Valentines Day with her family. Ila Rose fought a courageous year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.Born Apr 23, 1938 in Idaho Falls to Hugh Leo Martin and Gladys (Hunsaker) Martin. Ila Rose was the youngest daughter of seven children. When she was very young, her family lived in Swan Valley in a 1-room log cabin that her father built. Later, they moved to Rose Park, where she grew up during the 1940s. Ila Rose graduated from West High School, where she met her husband of 55 years, Fred. They were married on July 24, 1956.Ila Rose had a life full of dedication and service to her family, church and community. She still found time to do the things that she loved most; golfing, singing, dancing, gardening, baking, & cheering for the Utes, the Utah Jazz, and her grandchildren at their various sporting events.Ila Rose served on several boards, including 16 years on the SLC School Board, President of the Utah School Board Assoc., the Women's Auxiliary of the Consulting Engineers Council of Utah, and the Salt Lake City Library Board. Ila Rose valued education and other opportunities for the youth in her community. She will be remembered for her compassion for others, her generosity, her patience, and her grace. She is survived by her husband; Frederick James Fife III, her sisters; Barbara Stoops, Shirley Holladay, and Madge Barnhurst, daughters; Pam Fife Savage, Anegela (Todd) Bytheway, Charlotte (Chad) Fife-Jepperson, Katherine (Dennis Faris) Fife, and grandchildren; Andrea (Spencer), Christopher, Austin, Evan, Braxton, Cameron, Connor, and Myles, and great-granddaughter; Marley Rose. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Hugh Leo Martin, Jr., Kay L. Martin, sister; Renee Clark, son; Frederick James Fife IV, and great grandson; Benson Spencer Smith.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the 26th Ward LDS Church on 500 South Emery (1145 West) at 12:00 noon, with a viewing from 10:30 11:45 a.m. A separate viewing will also be held on Friday, February 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Garner Funeral Home on 1001 11th Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah. Burial and dedication will be held at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Samuelson, Dr. Watson and Dr. Miller for giving such great medical care to Ila Rose.
