A July 5 arraignment has been scheduled in 5th Circuit Court for the man blamed with initiating the May 28 disturbance at Bonneville Raceway that ended in a near riot.

Christopher Paul Phillips, 24, was charged in 5th Circuit Court with three Class A misdemeanor counts of assault on a peace officer and one count each of riot and intoxication, both Class C misdemeanors.Police believe other fans at the raceway became agitated when officers arrested Phillips, who had been fighting with other race fans, according to a police report. Race spectators who were angered by the arrest surrounded isolated police officers in a rock-and-bottle-throwing altercation that escalated when police ordered the track closed.

Valerie Vandercook, 38, has also been charged with two Class A misdemeanor counts of assault on a police officer and one count each of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both Class C misdemeanors. She was arraigned Thursday and is scheduled to appear at a July 15 pretrial conference.
