Corey Howard Peterson, 41, who had been a reporter, assistant city editor and copy editor for the Deseret News, died June 16, 1988, in a Salt Lake hospital.

He came to the Deseret News from the Ogden Standard Examiner in 1976. In 1980, the Deseret News recognized his outstanding work as a reporter by presenting him a Special Merit Award. He was at that time covering a large area of Salt Lake County - probably the largest beat geographically on the newspaper.He was born Aug. 10, 1946, in Brigham City, to Howard and Leta Petersen. He married Margaret Dyson, Dec. 16, 1972, in Salt Lake City.

Mr. Peterson attended Box Elder High School and received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Utah in 1972. He also studied at various times at Utah State University, the University of Maryland and the College of Great Falls, Mont.

He served with the U.S. Air Force, spending part of his military time in Thailand.

Survivors include his widow, North Salt Lake, and two sisters, Nedra Rasmussen, Upland, Calif., and Kaye Horrocks, Tooele. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced.
