I noticed that Bob Meyers' letter to the editor was highlighted in your newspaper recently. The letter stated, "It is a sad commentary on our family values if we consider the benefits of capitalism, democracy or any other earthly institution more important than the maintenance of the sacred parent-child bond."

Excuse me, but isn't one of the "benefits" of democracy freedom? And since when was freedom man-made? If freedom isn't a God-given right, as stated in our inspired Constitution, then what is? If freedom isn't sacred, what is? As Patrick Henry so eloquently put it, "Give me liberty, or give me death."Many thousands of men, women and even children have given the ultimate price for this sacred gift from control-freak dictators, including Fidel Castro. Elian Gonzalez's own mother paid the ultimate price for this principle. And yes, when it comes to principles, freedom supersedes even the sacred family bond, as many freedom fighters paid for the right of others to enjoy freedom by giving up all their other sacred rights, including their family bonds.

Don't be fooled into believing that life or family bonds are more important than freedom. If you believe in the scriptures, you will realize that this is what the war in heaven was all about -- whether or not one could have the right of freedom, or agency, on this Earth. Yes, I believe it is a principle worth fighting for.

And please don't let Elian's mother's ultimate gift to her son go to waste. It doesn't surprise me one bit that the liberal democrats are on communism's side in this ideological fight. After all, the communists have been declaring for years that harmony and equality are more important than freedom. They are wrong in this also.
