Despite warnings from the sheriff, Salt Lake County commissioners have decided to allow beer to be sold at a rock concert along the shores of the Great Salt Lake.

Commissioners Dave Watson and Bart Barker said Wednesday they will trust concert organizer Tom Barton. Barton insists the event, scheduled for Saturday, will be safe and enjoyable.Barton said about 1,000 people are expected to attend the concert, which will be held on private property adjoining the state beach on the south shore. Six bands will be playing between noon and 8 p.m. Barton said he will add extra rest rooms and security guards.

But Sheriff N.D. Hayward said the concert will attract mostly teenagers who are too young to drink alcohol. "I do not feel that for this event to be a success, the sale of alcoholic beverages is necessary," he said.
