Funeral services were held Wednesday in St. Anthony Catholic Church for Richard John Colombo Jr., 19, who died Saturday, apparently a victim of an impromptu game of Russian roulette.

Witnesses told Carbon County deputies that a group of seven young men went to a cabin on the Bryner Ranch in Nine Mile Canyon for a farewell party for one of the group who was returning to the Air Force. Some of the group had been drinking beer and shooting at cans and bottles, witnesses said.

The victim, who they said had drunk rum as well as beer, held a gun to his head and made several remarks such as, "Look, a loaded gun." He then pointed the gun away from himself before shooting it.

After about the third shot he fell to the ground with a bullet wound in his head above the ear.

The others drove him to the Soldier Creek Mine, about 15 or 20 miles away, where a security guard was notified and an ambulance was summoned from Price.

The ambulance met the group with the injured man in Willington, where he was transferred to the ambulance. The ambulance crew said the victim was in cardiac arrest at that time. The crew began administering CPR, which continued after arrival at the hospital, but the victim was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor at Castleview Hospital in Price.

Colombo was a 1988 graduate of Carbon High School, where he was captain of the football team. Deputies said there was no evidence of foul play.
