A Cache County man has been sentenced to serve six months in jail for his role in the Valentine's Day assault on two Logan teenagers.
First Circuit Judge Robert Daines also fined Shayne Rhodes, 18, Wellsville, $375 and ordered him to pay restitution of $889, double the victims' medical expenses.Earlier, Daines handed down the same sentence for Tracy Kendrick, 19, Millville.
The two each had entered no-contest pleas in the misdemeanor charge of assaulting two 16-year-old boys. In exchange for the pleas, prosecutors dropped one count of assault and one count of disorderly conduct.
Defense attorney Arden Lauritzen said the tough sentence was the result of a presentence report that "seems to judge my client partially" on the basis of a felony case the two defendants are charged in, in a similar beating that night.
Doug Brady, assistant city attorney, disagreed.
"The maximum sentence should be imposed because of this senseless and brutal attack and not because of any other act," Brady said.
Rhodes and Kendrick are also charged in Logan's 1st District Court with aggravated assault, a first-degree felony, in an assault on H. Dean Hawker, 36, North Logan, hours after the teenagers were attacked.
Hawker was hospitalized for more than three months after he was beaten and left unconscious in the bed of his pickup truck at the Logan Golf and Country Club parking lot.
