A good deed could have cost Trooper Dave Guest his life Monday evening.
Guest, 38, Salem, stopped his Utah Highway Patrol car at 5 p.m. on U.S. 6 between Salem and Spanish Fork to help a woman fix her car. As he stood on the side of the road, a plastic pipe bounced off a truck passing at 45 mph and struck the side of Guest's head."It knocked him out, and a motorist who had witnessed the accident used the patrol car radio to call it in," a dispatchersaid. "We were all really scared. It was a miracle he wasn't killed."
Mountain View Hospital treated Guest for a concussion and closed his wound with 16 sutures. The dispatcher said Guest's face was "swollen out 2 extra inches." Guest was released 3 1/2 hours after the accident.
