Police were trying Tuesday afternoon to identify an apparent homicide victim whose body was found near a railroad car.

A transient found the victim, a male Indian in his 30s, about 9 a.m., said Lt. Mel Shields. The body was face down next to a freight car near 450 S. 650 West. Shields said it appeared the victim had been there since Monday night. An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday afternoon, but police said it appears to be a homicide. The victim seemed to have suffered a great deal of head trauma, said Lt. Larry Stott.

"But there was so much dirt and blood on him that at this point we don't know how he was killed," Shields said. A bullet casing was found nearby but detectives are not sure if it's related.
