About 1,000 South Korean students held an unprecedented government-sanctioned rally near the demilitarized zone Tuesday, peacefully calling for reunification with communist North Korea.

The decision to allow the demonstration contrasted with the mobilization Friday of 60,000 police to crush a march to the border for talks with North Korean student leaders on reunification of the two Koreas.The demonstration Tuesday by about 1,000 students occurred at Imjingak, a memorial pavillion overlooking Freedom Bridge, which crosses a river into the demilitarized zone, 35 miles north of Seoul.
