Summit County officials have asked a court to seize $15,500 in cash that authorities believe may be profits from drug trafficking.

County Attorney Robert Adkins said Friday that his office filed a notice of seizure in 3rd District Court on money found in a search of a car stopped for speeding on I-80 one mile west of Wanship.

A Utah Highway Patrol officer stopped 35-year-old Richard Rau of Grand Rapids, Mich., on May 19.

Adkins said the officer became suspicious about the man's vague explanation of why he was carrying so much cash.

Adkins said a drug-searching dog from the state Narcotics and Liquor Law Enforcement Bureau became alerted while sniffing the bills.

No drugs were found, but the state was conducting tests for drug residue on the money, Adkins said.

Rau has 20 days to respond to the seizure notice or he will forfeit the cash.

Except for speeding, no charges have been filed against Rau.
