Summit County will have a night court of its own beginning June 15 when local attorneys will sit as judges to hear small claims cases in the City Council Chambers, a court administrator's office spokeswoman says.
The sessions will be held every other Wednesday night, with cases limited to judgments involving less than $1,000, said spokeswoman Rosemary Gacnik. Claims involving larger amounts must be adjudicated in regular court."So far, 14 local attorneys - all well-qualified and experienced - have signed up to be small claims court judges," Gacnik said. "They were sworn in last week and will serve on a voluntary basis."
Small claims litigation is handled similarly in Salt Lake City and Ogden.
Third Circuit Judge Maurice Jones had been hearing small claims matters in Summit County as part of his weekly calendar, Gacnik said.
