Israel Monday deported Jerusalem native Mubarak Awad, a Palestinian American who advocates non-violent resistance to Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Awad was taken to TWA Flight 885 in a large blue-and-white police van from the boarding area of Israel's El Al airline at the opposite end of the terminal at Ben-Gurion Airport outside Tel Aviv. The 44-year-old activist left on a flight for New York shortly after 4 p.m. (7 a.m. MDT), police said. Awad was expected to arrive in New York about 6 p.m. MDT.
Reporters were not allowed to see Awad before he left.
About 20 supporters of Awad demonstrated at the airport against the expulsion. The United States has protested the action.
