In response to the suggestion by Marcus Vincent (Readers' Forum, Dec. 10) that any modest tax hike that expired in a few years would be OK is simplistic beyond belief. To a person who has lost employment, any increase in taxes will certainly put them in an position of not being able to meet their current obligations. Who will pay these taxes? The 85 percent of the people who presently work twice as hard just to retain employment. Employers are presently reaping the benefit of employees willing to do what is needed just to have a job. We need employers to hire additional employees at reasonable wages to lower the unemployment. By giving a tax credit to employers who hire employees, we can turn this economy around.
