LOS ANGELES — Ricky Gervais (jer-VAYS') says stars at the upcoming Golden Globes can expect some gentle ribbing from him when he hosts the ceremony next month.

Gervais told a teleconference Tuesday he'll avoid anything cruel or distasteful, but those younger, thinner or more attractive than him will face teasing.

George Clooney, whom Gervais called a handsome, kind man and a fine actor, likely is safe. Gervais said poking fun at him would be like "having a go at Mother Teresa."

The Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 17, on NBC. Gervais, star of the British version of "The Office," will be the ceremony's first host since 1995.
