The FBI honored the Salt Lake Area Gang Project for its nearly 20 years of work in capturing criminals and helping gang members find a way out of their current lives.

The Director's Community Leadership Award will be presented Thursday to the gang project as recognition of the programs and conferences it offers annually.

The gang project makes use of its Public Enemy No. 1 program to apprehend fugitives, with help from the media and community; offers an annual training conference that draws about 900 attendees; and through a tattoo removal program, helps former gang members remove displays of their pasts.
