Davis High School's Brooke Hemsley traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, last month and took 12th place in the World Age Group Championships for power tumbling. She competed on the USA Power Tumbling team in the 17-18 age group and was among 900 competitors from 32 countries.
Events included trampoline and double mini-trampoline in which she became interested at 8 years old after spending a year in gymnastics and felt more comfortable on the trampolines.
Power tumbling has yet to catch on at the college level, but she says that Utah State offers classes (in power tumbling) and she will probably move on and participate there.
In the coming year, she plans to move up to the senior elite level and compete in national meets. This past year, to win a place on Team USA, she entered various meets in Arkansas, California and Nevada.
Her coach, Kathy Valdez, accompanied her to Russia, and Hemsley also attributes coaches Janelle Vettori and Shane Reeder for much of her success.
