Gov. Gary Herbert has selected Salt Lake attorney John A. Pearce to serve as his general counsel.

Pearce fills a position in the governor's office that has been vacant since shortly after Herbert took office in August. Herbert now has a full staff.

Pearce has been a civil litigator with Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough since 1999 and has been involved in several high-profile cases involving the ballot initiative process.

A native of Magna, he holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Utah and a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the Utah and California bar associations.
