U. women fall to No. 25 Louisville, 60-55
LOUISVILLE – Four players scored in double figures as the Utah women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 25 Louisville, 60-55, in Kentucky.
Kalee Whipple led Utah with 16 points while Taryn Wicijowski tallied 15. Janita Badon scored 12 points with a team- and career-high eight rebounds. Halie Sawyer added 10 points.
"Our kids competed exceptionally hard," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "We could have pulled out the 'W.' We are so far from executing and understanding the things that we need to understand, and we were right there. I am proud of them."
Utah (4-4) struggled early in the game, allowing Louisville (5-2) to go up by as many as seven points. With five minutes remaining in the first half, the Utes went on a tear to outscore the Cardinals, 18-2, to take a 28-22 lead at halftime.
The Utes stayed in front through the first 10 minutes of the second half, holding their lead by as many as six points before the Cardinals went on a 13-1 run through 5:30 left to take a six-point lead of their own, 49-43, which they would hold the rest of the game. Utah came within three points down the stretch, but could not rally in the final minutes.
