To commemorate the 10th birthday of TRAX, I suggest an unusual twist to gift-giving. In honor of Utah taxpayers giving their money to TRAX in the form of massive subsidies, how about TRAX giving us a full and honest accounting of the true costs and benefits of its service? The accountants must include the costs of capital investments and amortization. Remember that TRAX recently showed off new cars, meaning that the depreciation of TRAX cars is about 10 years.
The point is that for every rider who gets on TRAX for $1.25 or $1.50, Utah taxpayers likely pay at least another $8. This is the gift we keep on giving. The fact is that public transit has never paid for itself and will never come close to breaking even.
