Highly touted recruit James Aiono won't be playing football for the University of Utah this fall. The former Snow College and Murray High defensive end, who earned All-America honors last season, still has academic requirements to complete and won't enroll at the U. until January.
Aiono is considered one of the top prospects in Utah's 2009 recruiting class and was expected to help offset the loss of Paul Kruger, who opted to pursue an NFL career early and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens.
Despite the delayed entry, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Aiono will still have two years of remaining eligibility.
Utah coach KyleWhittingham confirmed that three other recruits — defensive end Eric Dago, defensive back Maxwell Lacy and wide receiver Ray Magee — are also completing academic work and are considered "day-to-day."
The Utes report for camp Wednesday. They'll hold their first practice Thursday.
