Eugene Fairbanks, son of famous Utah sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks, has completed "A Safe Return" for the Squalicum Harbor Fisherman's Memorial in Bellingham, Wash., at right. Fairbanks, a retired family physician, worked with his father in his studio. While the elder Fairbanks created many notable works in Utah, he also produced dozens of pieces in the PacificNorthwest. These include: "The Ninety First Division Memorial" at Fort Lewis, Wash.; "The Pioneer Mother Monument" at Esther Short Park in Vancouver, Wash.; and a colossal (three times life size) portrait of "George Washington" in the state capital. The Fisherman's memorial will serve as a continuation of the artistic influence of the elder Fairbanks for the Western United States.
