A man who is accused of threatening a painter with a hatchet was arrested Thursday by Salt Lake police.

When a man hired to paint an apartment near 350 South and 300 East arrived in the morning he noticed a naked man at the window of another apartment, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard.

The worker went about his business. But just before 10 a.m., the man the painter had seen earlier, now wearing clothes, entered through a door that the painter had left open to vent the paint fumes. The man was carrying a hatchet.

He put the hatchet down on the floor and left, Bedard said. He returned, picked up the weapon and held it above his head as if he were going to strike the painter, Bedard said.

The painter grabbed the man's hand and struggled with him. A witness jumped in to help. After wrestling the weapon away from the man, they picked him up, put him back in his own apartment and called 911, Bedard said.

Police arrived, questioned the man, arrested him and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault.
