A man who is accused of threatening a painter with a hatchet was arrested Thursday by Salt Lake police.
A man hired to paint an apartment near 350 South and 300 East arrived in the morning and noticed the assailant standing naked in front of his window, said Salt Lake police detective Jeff Bedard.
The worker went on with his business. But just before 10 a.m., the man, now wearing clothes, entered through the apartment door that the painter had left open to vent the paint fumes. The man was was carrying a hatchet.
He initially put the hatchet down on the floor and left, Bedard said. He then returned, picked up the weapon and held it above his head as if he were going to strike the painter, Bedard said.
The painter grabbed the man's hand and struggled with him. Another witness jumped in to help. After wrestling the weapon away from the man, they picked him up, put him back in his own apartment and called 911, Bedard said.
Police arrived, questioned the man, arrested him and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault.
