As part of its celebration for Utah's Week for the Animals, No More Homeless Pets in Utah is offering a month of free spay/neuter surgeries to qualified applicants.

The October Free Fix Special will be open to all of Utah's low-income families. Applicants who qualify must show proof of eligibility in order to have the animals in their household fixed at no charge. There is no limit on the number of animals that can be fixed per individual or household. Only dogs and cats qualify under this program and no sick animals will be fixed.

Here is what eligible families need to do to take advantage of this October Free Fix Special:

• Individuals can contact any of the participating veterinarians listed on www.utahpets.org to arrange for their pet(s) for surgery. There will be no surgery appointment made by phone.

• Interested individuals must go to the participating veterinarian's office to make the appointment. Applicants must take proof of eligibility with them in order to schedule an appointment. No appointment will be made without proof of eligibility. The clinic will make a copy and staple it to the application.

Once the paperwork is completed, the clinic will schedule the surgery appointment.

Accepted proof of eligibility: Membership in one of the following: Medicaid, CHIP, Food Stamps, WIC, SSD, Major VA Disability, Section 8 (HUD), or a copy of last year's tax return indicating household income not exceeding 200 percent of federal poverty level guidelines.

Pet owners are eligible if their income is below $20,800 for a single household; $28,000 for a household of two; $35,200 for a household of three; $42,400 for a household of four; $49,600 for a household of five; $56,800 for a household of six; $64,000 for a household of seven; $71,200 for a household of eight; for each additional person add $7,200.
