LAYTON — A six vehicle accident midday at one of the city's busiest intersections snarled traffic but caused no serious injuries.

Six people were taken to area hospitals as a result of the 12:12 p.m. smash-up at Hill Field Road and Antelope Drive, said Layton Police Sgt. Mark Chatlin.

A man in a car headed south on Hill Field Road was approaching the intersection when the traffic signal turned red. Chatlin said instead of hitting the brakes, the motorist accidentally stepped on the gas. The car traveled through the intersection and swerved into the northbound lanes, striking multiple cars.

The collision shut down northbound lanes of Hill Field Road for a brief time, forcing diversion of traffic to alternate routes.
