Survivor: Gabon (7 p.m., Ch. 2): Season 17 begins with a two-hour episode. And, for the first time since Season 3, the contestants are in Africa.
Ugly Betty (7 p.m., Ch. 4): When we left Betty back in May, she had a big decision to make should she accept Henry's marriage proposal or jet off to Italy with Gio? I won't give it away, but we quickly learn what her decision was and the show immediately moves on from there. Tonight's third-season premiere is good; next week's episode is great. And that's a very good sign.
My Name Is Earl (7 and 7:30 p.m., Ch. 5): After lurching wildly off course last season, this show tries to regain its footing as the fourth season begins. In the first episode, Earl discovers the dying child he once stole a wish from is still alive; then Earl and Randy try to make amends with their childhood neighbors.
Smallville (7 p.m., Ch. 30): Clark goes to work at the Daily Planet.
College football (7 p.m., ESPN): Southern Cal at Oregon State
The Office (8 p.m., Ch. 5): Everybody is trying to lose weight; Jim misses Pam. And, uh-oh, it's an hourlong episode. And those are never as good as the 30-minute variety. (Season premiere)
Supernatural (8 p.m., Ch. 30): Demon hunters are being killed by ghosts.
ER (9 p.m., Ch. 5): As the 15th and final season begins, the staff deals with the aftermath of the explosion that destroyed the ambulance.
