ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico quarterback Donovan Porterie is out for the season after tearing two ligaments in his right knee during last weekend's 56-14 loss at Tulsa.

Porterie, a junior from Port Arthur, Texas, was 11-of-13 for 92 yards passing with an interception before leaving late in the first half.

Redshirt freshman Brad Gruner, who took over and threw a late TD pass, is expected to start for the Lobos (1-3) in Saturday's game at New Mexico State (1-1).

"People still expect us to win games," coach Rocky Long said. "For us to be a good football team, a lot depends on the play of the quarterback. If Brad matures into being a good quarterback as the season progresses, we'll be a good football team."
