As a Brigham Young University senior, I have noticed the gradual decline of spelling ability among classmates and society. I believe a large cause of this is the advent of automatic spell checkers and the informal culture of the Internet.
Technology is blurring the lines between what is formal and informal. Many errors creep into formal documents, signs and even resumes. In some cases, it can cost someone his or her job.
Project Read is hosting a spelling bee fundraiser on Sept. 27 in the Provo City Library, open to anyone 18 and older. Proceeds will help Project Read offer one-on-one tutoring to illiterate adults in Utah County. More information is available at www.project-read.com or by calling 801-852-6654.
