About 15 years ago, while I was the editor of a small daily newspaper in the northern end of California's Central Valley, I stumbled on the obvious: News, on the whole, is fairly grim.

That was a problem.

So I took it upon myself to try to remedy that great failing.

But what was there I could write a humor column about?

Then came my epiphany. I had an enormous reservoir of material living within the walls of the asylum I called home.
