SACRAMENTO, Calif. Cameron Higgins threw for 380 yards and four touchdowns to lead Weber State to a 32-27 Big Sky Conference victory over Sacramento State on Saturday.
Tim Toone caught six passes for 146 yards and one touchdown, and Trevyn Smith ran for 123 yards for the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0 Big Sky), who hadn't won in Sacramento since 1998. Higgins also scored on a 4-yard run.
Tony Washington caught three passes for 81 yards and one touchdown and Evander Wilkins ran for 93 yards for the Hornets (2-2, 0-1), who have lost five straight Big Sky openers.
Trailing 20-10 in the third quarter, Sacramento State tied the game on a 25-yard field goal and a 2-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Jake Croxdale. The tying score was set up when the Wildcats' Bryant Eteuati fumbled a kickoff on the Hornets' 25-yard line.
Weber State regained the lead on the next possession when Toone caught a 20-yard pass from Higgins and ran 40 yards for the TD. Weber State missed the point-after attempt to leave the score 26-20 after three quarters.
Weber State extended its lead 32-20 when Eteuati caught a 31-yard TD pass with 5:31 left in the fourth quarter.
After Sacramento State reserve quarterback Duncan White tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Dylan Lane to make the score 32-27, the Wildcats' defense stopped Wilkins from converting on fourth-and-1 at the Hornets' 49-yard line.
NORTHERN ARIZONA 19, SOUTHERN UTAH 14: At Cedar City, K.J. Gerard intercepted a pass in the end zone with 23 seconds remaining to seal Northern Arizona's 19-14 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night.
Gerard outleaped Tysson Poots on a 6-yard pass from Cody Stone after Southern Utah drove 84 yards in the final two minutes.
Northern Arizona (2-1) held Southern Utah (1-3) to minus-26 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Stone completed 17 of 48-passes for 304 yards.
Lance Kriesien gave the Lumberjacks the lead when he escaped a sack and scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with 5:24 left in the game. Southern Utah had gone up 14-13 early in the fourth on a 5-yard touchdown from Stone to Jared Ursa.
Kriesien, who played running back before subbing for Michael Herrick at quarterback, finished with 75 yards rushing. Southern Utah had 13 carries for minus-26 yards.
