Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies were seeking a man in connection with an altercation over a stolen motorcycle that led to a forced "ride" with a woman and child who happened to be passing the scene of the incident north of Murray on Friday evening.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Johnson said a call came in at about 5 p.m. Friday that initially sounded like a routine traffic accident. After deputies arrived, they discovered that the driver of an SUV spotted a motorcycle he knew to be stolen near 4100 South and West Temple and may have forced the rider of the bike off the road.

The rider ditched the bike, and witnesses spotted the man getting into a maroon van a few blocks away. Johnson said the female driver of the van returned to the initial scene and told deputies that a "large white man" had forced her to give him a ride to 4500 South and 700 East.

Johnson said Salt Lake County deputies, with the help of Murray police, initiated a search of the area near where the woman dropped off the man but were unable to locate him. Johnson said neither the woman driving the van, nor the child with her, was harmed, but the man had made her fear the consequences of not complying with his demands.

Johnson said they are looking for a white male who is described as large, and may have cuts on his face and one arm. Johnson asked that anyone who may have seen the man in the vicinity of 4500 South and 700 East call the Salt Lake County sheriff's dispatch at 743-7000.
