Black Tide will perform at the Saltair pavilion on Tuesday night.

Black Tide bassist Zachary "Zakk" Sandler listened to anything he could when he was a kid.

"It didn't matter what it was," Sandler said during a phone call from Asheville, N.C. "I mean I liked Van Halen to Meat Loaf, basically anything I could get my hands on."

Sandler started playing guitar when he was 8, but then moved to the bass.

"It was all music to me," he said.

Black Tide is comprised of Sandler, vocalist/guitarist Gabriel Garcia, drummer Steven Spence and guitarist Austin Panix. And the main thing these four guys from Miami, Fla., want to do is be in a band and be happy.

"I think we've got the band part down," Sandler said with a laugh.

Black Tide, currently on tour with Bullet for My Valentine, toured with Slipknot on the Rockstar Mayhem Festival tour, which, said Sandler was definitely a highlight of his career.

"I was able to meet my idols," he said. "And to play on stage in front of something like 15,000 people is the ultimate rush. In fact, to tell all those people to jump and see them jump was funny to me. I couldn't believe that they were dong what I told them to do. I mean, they all listened to me."

Black Tide released it's major-label debut "Light from Above" on Interscope Records in March. The band hired Johnny K, who worked with Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, Finger Eleven and Plain White T's, to produce "Light From Above."

"Johnny was both a slave master and laid back," said Sandler. "There were times when he had to put the hammer down and tell us to get busy with our music. And other times he told us what he wanted and left us alone to do what we needed to do.

"I mean we were in awe a bit because he has produced a lot of other bands, and that's why we hired him. He was able to help us make an album that we can say we wanted to make."

Among the songs on the album is a remake of Metallica's "Hit the Lights."

"That song is the epitome of metal when it was released back in the '80s," said Sandler. "It was brutal, and not like anything that was released until then. And we have been covering it and having fun with it. So we decided to record it."

"Besides, Metallica is the best metal band in the world."
