I, like Sarah Palin, am from a small town. My father did not even graduate from high school. But it was my parents' priority that each of their children would graduate from college — which we did. My father always said, "If you aim for the barn door, you will probably be lucky to hit the barn door. I want you to aim for the stars, and maybe the least you will do is hit the barn door."

Watching the elections this year and seeing the Republican Party's definition of "family values" by celebrating mediocrity makes me wonder if I should not have encouraged my son to impregnate one of his fellow students and get a job flipping burgers.

I still think my father was right. My family and I still plan to "aim for the stars" and not the barn door.
