You may know them as "Trekkies" ("Star Trek" fans), "Starriors" ("Star Wars" aficionados) or Harry Potter-philes.
But whatever you may call them, they and other science-fiction and fantasy devotees are converging on Layton this weekend for the fourth annual Mountain-Con Science Fiction Celebration.
Described by organizers as "a celebration of fandom," the three-day convention will feature seminars, workshops and panels, costume contests, game rooms, a dealers room, movie screenings (among the selected features are "The Color of Magic," "InAlienable" and "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake") and a "banquet with the stars."
Most events for Mountain-Con IV will be held at the Davis Conference Center, 1651 N. 700 West.
Scheduled show business guests for this year's convention include actors Sarah Douglas ("Conan the Destroyer"), Richard Herd ("seaQuest DSV," "Star Trek: Voyager"), Herb Jefferson Jr. ("Battlestar Galactica") and Penny Johnson Jerald ("The 4400," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine").
Douglas, who played the evil Ursa in "Superman" and "Superman 2," will be hosting a special event titled "In Conversation: A Resident Alien in Hollywood." Herd will host his own, question-and-answer seminar, "How to Audition."
And from the literary world, authors Larry Correia ("Monster Hunter International"), Brandon Mull ("Fablehaven") and Brandon Sanderson ("Elantris") will be appearing, as will the convention's artist guest of honor, cartoonist David Reddick ("Legend of Bill," "Rod & Barry").Also, select events will be co-hosted by Kerry Jackson, from X-96's "Radio From Hell" morning show. Jackson and members of the "Geek Show Podcast," including Deseret News critics Jeff Vice and Scott D. Pierce, will be recording two episodes of the show at the convention on Sunday.
